 I'm not necessarily an expert either. The biggest problem here is how to
 get the history from one place (your client) to the other (the new
 participant). If you don't care as much about maintaining the history as
 if they were there (showing messages as coming from the appropriate
 people), you could possibly just send X amount of history to the other
 user as an IM message. Getting this to show up in the chat window rather
 than a separate IM window for the other user is another problem. You could
 potentially invent some sort of markup for this, but it might be difficult
 to ensure it works on all protocols (which would be necessary for
 inclusion in pidgin as a plugin).

 If I were you, I'd at least check with your IT staff to see if this
 feature is available on your server.

 Another possibility, which might be an adequate solution for you, is the
 persistent chat feature which I think is available in the latest pidgin
 release. If you have a dedicated chat room for your group, as long the
 user has pidgin running, the persistent chat feature would keep the person
 in the room, even if they close the window. When they re-open the chat
 room, all the history will be there.
