 Yes. You do make good points, but also consider that:

 -People don't want to use software that is foreign to them. One draw of
 programs like OpenOffice, Firefox, and Ubuntu is that they are very
 similar to their proprietary counterparts. People like myself (and 6 or 7
 other people as you indicated), will inevitably start using Pidgin and say
 "Wait a second, why can't Pidgin do the same thing that AIM can do"
 -You do make a good point that having the ability to IM while "Away" was a
 huge draw, but at the same time people using AIM are used to returning
 from Away automatically. By making it an option (like AIM 5.9 had) you get
 the best of both worlds. Additionalally, it would be easy to implement and
 and wouldn't take any simplicity away from the program.
 -People want options out of the box (plugins are always nice, but out of
 the box is even better). Options are what make Firefox, Ubuntu, and other
 pieces of free software so attractive.
