 Replying to [comment:18 Johnny K]:
 > -People don't want to use software that is foreign to them. One draw of
programs like OpenOffice, Firefox, and Ubuntu is that they are very
similar to their proprietary counterparts. People like myself (and 6 or 7
other people as you indicated), will inevitably start using Pidgin and say
"Wait a second, why can't Pidgin do the same thing that AIM can do"

And if we *do* this, other people will inevitably start using Pidgin and
say "Wait a second, why can't Pidgin do the same thing that MSN can do,"
or "Wait a second, why can't Pidgin do the same thing that Yahoo! can do,"
or "Wait a second, why can't Pidgin do the same thing that Gadu-Gadu can
 do?"

Remember that we stopped being an AIM replacement 7 years ago. Now, we're
just an IM client that can take ideas from other existing clients (which
is why this ticket is still open), but by no means should we force
ourselves to bind to the behavior of one particular client to please just
the users who used that client.

If I were to follow your advice, mathematically, it would make sense to do
what MSN Messenger does, as it has the most users. They would not expect
Pidgin to change their status for them seemingly arbitrarily.
