 A plugin that ships with pidgin is "out of the box". I don't know if you
 consider plugins as second-class citizens to built-in options but they
 aren't, so if you do think about them that way I would encourage you to
 stop thinking that way as it is unproductive and doesn't track with the
 way pidgin handles things.

 I haven't heard anyone request this feature in years, the six or seven
 other people I mentioned were ages ago, mostly right after we removed the
 preference for this in the first place. So I really don't think there is
 anything approaching a useful number of people who really want this
 feature. And like I said, a plugin could do this absolutely trivially, so
 anyone who wants to write one is welcome to do so. If it is clean and
 submitted it might even be accepted into pidgin (though the plugin pack
 people are more likely to take it then we are).

 And I doubt that for most people "[o]ptions are make Firefox, Ubuntu, and
 other pieces of free software so attractive", but that is neither here nor
 there.
