Comment:

 Applications do not change virtual desktops your window manager does, that
 being said the way an application requests focus can cause your window
 manager to change workspaces. Both focusing of the conversation windows
 and focusing the buddy list call the gtk_window_present function which
 should be using the correct hinting to your window manager that the window
 wants to be focused. Your window manager can then do what it likes with
 this hint, I would check your KDE settings specifically for focus stealing
 prevention and see if KDE is opting to not switch workspaces for you.
