 Sean, this is a result of 8f765c8b1620e8ac488e2be4e987153c51ba2f0a.

 The last-sent time is not updated when the status is available anyway. And
 the current behaviour (auto-reply during an active conversation) is worse
 than the old one (some people getting confused). May be we should revert
 the change, and look for a better fix for the confused people.
