Blush..... Yes, at least in my case. Easy to discover via a "ps -a".

It never occurred to me that this could be the problem. There was no trace
of its window anywhere on the screen (as far as I could see). Killing the
existing process and starting pidgin over again worked nicely.
A few notes, then:
I. It still says "libnm_glib_nm_state_cb: dbus returned an error". It may
be ok, but it sort of does not send the signal that all is well in the
case pidgin fails (Normally I would start pidgin not frmo the command
line, so this message is hidden. When you start to investigate and start
from the command line and see this message you wonder whats up)
2. If there is another instance, it would have been nice of pidgin to
actually say so instead of just dieing. imho
