Ok - I found out the mystery. I did have an instance already running, but
I had read other posts about this causing the main_loops error and so I
swore I did a bunch of "ps" commands to try and find it but don't recall
seeing anything. Anyways, here's what happened in hopes it helps others.
1. Pidgin somehow got set to not show the buddy list by default, so when
it was started up it only added an icon to my KDE panel (the icon is a
green circle with a chat bubble behind it). I didn't see this yesterday,
but when I got home my wife says "hey, you're logged in!" so that was my
first clue, then when I got into work I had a message from her (but still
no buddy list), so this led me to the panel and I saw two icons (since I
had been trying to start pidgin all afternoon yesterday). Anyways, right
click the icon and set buddy list to show by default and I restarted
pidgin just to be sure - looks normal again, thanks to those who chimed in
- it helped me since I thought I was loosing my mind.
