 *IF* this is to be done, option number 1 seems like a reasonable way to do
 it. Option 2 violates the separation of duties between applications and
 window managers and it'd be hard to do it right (which is why window
 managers exist). Option 3 seems redundant, because if you mouse-over a
 buddy, the tooltip provides the information anyway. Option 4 is definitely
 something that does not belong in Pidgin proper, but a plugin might be
 able to do.

 I wonder how many people would be bothered by making option 1 the default
 and providing a checkbox Show -> Buddy Details Always option for the big
 list view. I'm a small list kind of guy, but I can see the point being
 made here. My concern over inconsistency would be flapping if you were
 right on the edge. One way to remedy that is to have two boundary points
 rather than one. So, for some given window size, maybe you need 8 buddies
 to trigger a big-to-small transition, but 12 to trigger a small-to-big
 transition, rather than using the actual boundary condition of 10.
