 forgot to mention that i tried control-c. that makes gdb output "Quit" and
 i get another (gdb) prompt. pidgin doesn't change in any way -- the couple
 of channels open remain frozen. then any input at the gdb prompt (even
 just enter) gives the same message (Couldn't get registers: No such
 process.)
