 I just want to point out that seanegan explained in comment # 124 (and
 possibly even earlier) why auto-resizing and manual resizing are
 effectively mutually exclusive - It's all GTK+'s fault.

 It seems to me that someone needs to talk to the GTK+ devs about this
 problem, and in the meantime, we need to come up with an interim solution.

 The 2.4.1 implementation might be an acceptable interim solution. Or,
 maybe something like what I proposed in [comment:69 comment # 69] could
 work. What I had suggested there was to have something of a "manual resize
 mode" wherein the the auto-resize would be temporarily disabled until you
 had finished your handle-dragging.
