Comment:

 Updates should not wipe your information, if that happened something went
 wrong. Have you looked in the normal pidgin .purple directory to see if
 things are in fact gone? Have you made sure the directory you think pidgin
 is using is actually the directory it is using (what does the Help->Debug
 Window say when you make a change to the preferences for example). What
 files contain what is explained in the FAQ and on the wiki.
