regardless of cost. I am still unconvinced that given a properly
functional auto-resizing entry area there is any reason to need a manual
resizing option.
One of the big problems with auto-resizing (that's been said already many
times here, which none of the developers have addressed) is the constant
visual jarring effect. A lot of people like static size boxes that don't
move often - it's easier on the eyes and and it's easier to tell when new
messages come while you are typing (which seems to happen a lot). This is
what is so appealing about manual resizing. The other thing is the sense
of control. People like having total control over the size of their
windows. The user knows best what works best for him/her.
> I'd be happy if the auto-resize functionality started at four lines,
then grew up to eight or so. But I feel like that's larger than the
average user probably cares for, and preferences for min/max size seems
like twice as many options as a manual option
For me, 50% max is not sufficient. I might need to copy/paste some code
(or some document text or some email text I want send, but have the person
on the other end review first), so I want the input box to go to the max
height possible (the full window, as the manual resize allowed in 2.3),
review my text, then send it, then put the input box back down to minimum
size.
Since I don't think every user can agree on a min and max, there needs to
be a way to override the defaults. And I still think manual resizing is
more desirable and user friendly. It will always be MY preference. If
you developers agree flexibility is a good thing, then give me the
flexibility to choose manual resizing. Don't force your preference on the
rest of us.
