 Well ''''''i'''''' don't know at all how to write a patch for pidgin. I
 don't even know which language to begin with. This here was more like
 asking for such a patch.

 But anyway: I don't think it would encourage the discribed behaviour any
 more, firstly because on MSN (or MSN Plus!) it's already like that and
 secondly because in Pidgin it's not as easy to change the friendly name as
 in MSN and the thing easy to change and in the place where the Friendly
 Name is in MSN lies the local Alias.
