 I see what you are saying, but I feel that the ability to set your own
 ratio of history area size to input area size is stronger. I guess that
 the underlying reason why problems like this are reported is that you had
 created a generic ability and people will use generic solutions to
 problems in different ways. That is in itself a great strength which I
 believe the new behaviour ignores.

 Meantime, I'll try the plugin you pointed me at (thanks again), but I
 don't think I'll be upgrading still (certain misgivings about another
 feature that appeared in 2.4.1) - however that discussion is in another
 ticket (#5034).
