Comment:

 I tried uninstalling and reinstalling - the same behavior is occurring. I
 am using whatever GTK+ package comes with Pidgin - I can check if you let
 me know how. My font is set to what I think is the default size (as far as
 I can tell, Pidgin no longer lists font size numbers anywhere) and is
 listed as "sans". My IM window is 530(w)x400(h) pixels.

 In general, the program becomes slow when the IM window is handling large
 quantities of text. Eventually, at around 13 lines (300 independently-
 spaced words), typing becomes delayed and graphic glitches occur as the
 scrollbar expands to accommodate the new lines of text. Copy and pasting
 my 300 words results in a noticeable lag. Copying and pasting my 600 words
 results in about 2 seconds of lag in the pasting process itself and the IM
 window becomes glitchy when performing any action within it. Copying and
 pasting the 600 word message to 1200 words freezes Pidgin for about 30
 seconds. It eventually becomes responsive but the IM window barely
 functions. Anything beyond this freezes the program altogether.
