 I just noticed that my taskbar does flash when the conversation window is
 created when someone sends me a message for the first time.  I did an
 xprop on that window and demands_attention is being set in that case (as
 well as the visible hint bit).  So I'm wondering, is that what GTK does by
 default when new, unfocused windows are created, is it the X server, or is
 it Pidgin?  I had a look around in the Pidgin source, but I'm afraid my C
 knowledge isn't quite up to par.

 While I agree that the urgent bit should be properly handled by the WM/DE,
 if it is Pidgin setting demands_attention (rather than it just being a GTK
 or X default), would it not be appropriate to handle the the notification
 the same way in all other instances, too?
