 It kind of concerns me that the buffer size is so important to its
 success. I wonder.. my 6th packet received is even larger than the buffer
 size of 16384. When I use the larger buffer size, all but that one packet
 can be read in one chunk. Is your 6th packet larger than that buffer size
 or are any of the packets you receive larger than the 13941 packet?

 If possible, could you see what happens if you have the buffer larger than
 the 13941 packet, but smaller than the other packet, if you have one
 that's larger? Could it be that the Adium SSL plugin doesn't like reading
 less than the total packet size in one go?
