 It is only my 6th one that is larger than that 16384 - it is 60124 in
 length.

 I think the problem comes back to which server is being used. The packet
 which causes the problems comes from the login.live.com servers whereas
 the rest come from contacts.msn.com (and others too?). I think that the
 problems all stem from something weird about the live login server, rather
 than something fundamentally wrong with the adium ssl plugin. Its probably
 worth noting that I've never had any problems with this kind of thing with
 buddy management or with off-line messages, so it does seem to be server
 specific.

 Do you still want me to try and fiddle around with the packet sizes?
