Comment (by deryni):
The gtkrc file documentation is unfortunately rather lacking (don't blame
us that's a GTK+ thing). I don't know why they were removed from the
plugin, but as I said a simple install of a version of pidgin with the
settings and a click on the 'write settings to gtkrc file' button will
keep the settings working regardless of the plugins continued existance.
And will give you a concrete example of some simple gtkrc file changes
that are possible. As to why not give an interface to this sort of thing
in general it is because you can't have a general interface for this sort
of thing, an interface always needs creating a text file does not. The
entire point of the GTK+ Theme Control plugin was to give people the
ability to graphically make the changes they want and then have the gtkrc
file they can carry around with them and experiment with, I never indended
for people to keep the plugin loaded at all times.
I think your characterization of the plugin is a bit overstated, it was
pathetically minimal in what it allowed (in that there is essentially
infinitely more that could be done in the file than what the plugin
interface allowed) it also didn't handle a number of things that it could
have. But this is all besides the point. The plugin .so or .dll file from
a version of pidgin which has the options should work just fine in 2.4.1
(and forwards until the end of the 2.x.x line), but once again save your
settings to a file, that's the point of the whole thing. Then save the
file somewhere you keep safe (in case you decide to mess with the plugin
later, save to the file again, and want to restore your old copy; or in
case you want to put it on a new machine or a new user account on your
current machine).
