 Hey guys, don't know if anyone is still reading this thread but I found a
 solution to my problem, thanks to an Ubuntu thread.

 I first determined that it was my router's firewall that was blocking my
 Pidgin from connecting to AIM.  After disabling my firewall, Pidgin was
 able to connect to AIM.  With the firewall, it wasn't allowing the port
 5190 I guess.  So I changed it to 443 as told by an Ubuntu member on the
 Ubuntu forums.  This fix also works for windows.

 To change the ports, go to Accounts > {username for aim} > Edit Account >
 Advanced.  There should be a text field for the port.  The default value
 would be 5190, so just change that to 443.
