Comment (by hanscastorp):
You write: "No one has dismissed any criticism, least of all me, what I
have dismissed is backless assertions of pure preference"
This discussion has basically ended, and this statement demonstrates why.
The Pidgin developers have apparently decided to ignore the preferences of
users. The Pidgin projects' goal is apparently not to create an
application which serves the needs of millions of linux users, but rather
to create an application which the small group of developers prefer.
This is your choice. If you Pidgin developers don't care about the
preferences of users then of course you are free to do whatever they want.
But don't be surprised when forks like funpidgin are created. That is the
benefit of opensource. Apparently the disadvantage of opensource projects
is that developers for a project can and will ignore all feedback that
they consider just "backless assertions of pure preference," and will push
their changes over all criticism and feedback.
Why would anyone become "active thoughtful members of the pidgin
community" when so many people express dislike about a feature change but
it doesn't do a bit of good? Why would a thousand people take the time to
complain when developers will counter with, "you're only a thousand people
and thus a drop in a bucket, so your opinion doesn't really matter."
In the end all of this doesn't matter. Continue to dismiss the "backless
assertions of pure preference" of users of your program. If convenient UI
features continue to change for the worse in Pidgin, ultimately a fork or
an alternative program will gain in popularity, and Pidgin will become
irrelevant (except of course to the small core of Pidgin developers who
will continue to fawn over their tiny input fields).
I have enjoyed using Gaim and Pidgin for the last few years. Perhaps
removing the option to resize the text input field will start a wave of
change in IM programs. Perhaps not. Good luck!
