 I believe this was available in an older version (which I don't remember,
 sorry!).  But there was a way to show/hide conversations without losing
 the conversations itself.  This has nothing to do with the defect #4979.

 Within the tools menu, there was a feature called "Show/Hide
 Conversations".  Any old conversation you had open could be hidden, which
 new conversations wouldn't be.  You had the ability to show all
 conversations too.

 Currently using 2.4.0, on Windows XP.
