 You are likely talking about the
 http://plugins.guifications.org/trac/wiki/hideconv plugin which they no
 longer build by default as pidgin now supports marking chatrooms as
 'persistant' at which point closing them will merely hide them to the
 buddy list until re-opened. Add the chat to the buddy list and right-click
 it to get the persistant option.
