 I too would like to see the status and status message treated separately,
 so that if the user changes status the message is left as it is.

 In fact, personally, I would be quite happy if it were not even
 highlighted, just left alone completely, however the idea mentioned above
 seems more of a compromise between the current behaviour and my own
 preference.
