 Yes, I agree that requiring some non-trivial action on the status box is
 not particularly obvious. I'm not against adding the code so that the
 entry area re-appears when no message currently exists and the mouse is
 moved into the status selector, I'm just not sure it will really help. I
 also think it likely that it will mostly just be horribly annoying (for
 example the dropdown button will move away from where your mouse is
 requiring more movement before you can click it).

 I also happen to think that closing this ticket wasn't wrong as we really
 don't get (m)any comments about this and I don't see anything immediately
 better that we could do. Feel free to continue to suggest ideas or try out
 different things and submit some patches if you want to.
