 This is indeed a different issue (and should be a different ticket), and
 not a bug at all.  You have an alias set for your IRC account, and Pidgin
 displays the alias in preference to your nick.  If you clear the alias
 field in the account modify dialog, your nick will change normally in the
 user list.
