 Just as a matter of interest what other things do you have installed?

 I know of a bug in GTK that if you have a desktop wallpaper changing
 application it eats memory, because it doesn't free up the old desktop
 image.  I just wondered if there was something that might be related?

 Do you have any remote desktop software running?
 Do you have any user interface customising software installed?
 Do you have the desktop setup as a webpage (so you can get non-standard
 images or gadgets on the desktop)?
