 I performed these steps:

 ...and then installed all the packages produced, which replaced my
 existing pidgin packages (apt-get told me so). I did not enable anything
 extra in GNOME or GTK, its a stock Debian testing install with all the
 packages up to date. As a matter of fact the program started crashing and
 I figured I hadn't updated recently, but after updating my packages, the
 program continued to crash.
