Those directions seem like they should be functionally equivalent to the
[http://wiki.debian.org/?HowToGetABacktrace official Debian directions]
and they should not cause the problem you are seeing.
Unfortunately, the provided backtrace doesn't mention pidgin anywhere and
I am at a loss as to what to suggest you try. Generally when GTK+ dies on
assertions it is because someone/something has enabled fatal assertions or
is using an unstable build of GTK+. If you are in fact running an
unmodified Debian testing neither of those should be true. Though you can
check your environment variables if you want just to be sure you don't
have one lying around doing this.
