Comment (by deryni):

The checkbox is not even a preference in pidgin, it simply reacts to what
the accelerator is on the Conversation->Close menu item. You can see this
for yourself by bringing up the preferences window, turning the option on,
checking the Conversation->Close menu item, and then while having both the
menu and the preferences window active hovering over the Close item and
hitting backspace (assuming you have GTK+ set up to allow on-the-fly menu
item changing) you will see the Escape accelerator disappear and the
preference checkbox uncheck. That being said, by default we do not provide
an accelerator for the Close menu and as such the preference should not be
 checked.

And as to which people would prefer by default, I don't know. Escape has
been used by most/many of the official clients for ages, whereas ctrl-w is
a more recent growing 'standard' for closing tabbed pages. I don't want to
guess about which is more popular or more expected, other than to say that
ctrl-w means delete-word to me as much as it means close-tab whereas
escape has no other meaning. That being said I don't use either of them to
 close a tab.
