 Please double check that the "escapes closes conversations" setting is not
 on by default. I don't remember choosing that option, what I remember was
 the Ctrl+W settting that worked before stopping to work after I updated
 pidgin to a new version.

 This was a while ago so I could be confused. Nevertheless, it might be
 worth checking on a fresh install just to be sure.

 I think most people would prefer "escapes closes conversations" to be off
 by default.
