Comment:

 There's no reason that the behavior would be different with the `-d` flag
 specified.

 Are you launching pidgin in a different way when specifying the flag (i.e.
 from a Command Prompt window versus from the start menu or from windows
 explorer or from something else)?

 Environment variables are inherited from the parent process, so if you're
 launching pidgin from another process (e.g. a Command Prompt), the
 environment from that process will be used instead of the "new"
 environment containing any changes you've made.

 If all else fails, a reboot or logging out and back in will fix it.
