 An example of how this is problematic:

 GIMP includes its own GTK+ but uses the system-wide one if it's available,
 in favour of its own. This is problematic between the latest versions of
 GIMP 2.4.6 (GTK+ 2.12.9) and Pidgin 2.4.3 (GTK+ 2.12.8 rev. a) where the
 GTK versions aren't the same, resulting in a hundred or something prompts
 related to libglib2-0-0.dll when loading GIMP.
