 This is not the case. I was simply trying to log in to my account. Also,
 disabling all the plugins didn't resolve the situation at that time.

 I would if I could, but after toggling the "Show when offline" flag for
 the buddy in my list that was set to always display, it started up without
 any crashes. Disabling libxmpp.dll by renaming it made pidgin start.
 Disabling all the other plugins by renaming them had no effect.

 My guess would be that something probes the online contacts, and this
 contact wasn't online causing a failure. Perhaps related to retrieving of
 user avatars?
