#6854: Pidgin loses all account information on Windows XP for no apparent reason

 Two days ago I logged out of my windows xp machine on which pidgin 2.4.3
 was running perfectly happily. In between then and now all that has
 happened is that another user has logged in to their own account on the
 same machine and used it for non-Pidgin purposes

 When I logged back into my account today and attempted to run Pidgin, it
 loaded as if it had never been run before, with no account data, and
 suggesting that I should make some new accounts.

 This is very strange as I can see that there are still files and log files
 in

 C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\.purple

 And that the accounts.xml file appears to contain all the data you would
 expect.

 How can I tell Pidgin to use these account details, and why did this
 happen in the first place?
