Comment:

 First things first, save a copy of your accounts.xml (and any other files
 that may or may not be being used correctly) somewhere safe.

 Do you have file extension hiding on? Is that accounts.xml file really
 accounts.xml.save? If not run pidgin -d from the command prompt and see
 what path pidgin is trying to read your settings from, if that path isn't
 the path you expect check your environment variable settings to see if
 perhaps the HOME or PURPLEHOME variables are set to something you don't
 want.
