 Thanks for the prompt help.

 Using pidgin -d revealed that the paths were all ok, but that it errored
 attempting to parse the accounts.xml file and copied it.

 To solve things quickly I opened the seemingly-not-corrupt accounts.xml
 file and simply cut and paste all the account details into a the relevent
 forms to recreate the old accounts.
