 Problem Solved!

 You asked whether I had used my login in MSN8+, and that prompted me to
 download and install the newest Windows Live Messenger (
 http://get.live.com/messenger/overview ).  I signed in with my username
 there, and received

 Error Code 80048834

 Of course MS had no help on this error code, so I googled it and found my
 solution.

 Using IE, I had to go to http://login.live.com and sign in with my
 username (I have done this many, many times - it's even my XBOX Live login
 ...).  As soon as I logged in, the site prompted me to Accept the new
 Terms of Service or User Agreement or some similar wording.

 I Accepted, signed out, closed the browser and upgraded Pidgin from v2.4.3
 to v2.5.2.  I tried my username and it instantly worked.

 I hope this solution helps someone else in the future.

 Thanks for the idea which prompted me to try my username on the newest MSN
 Live Messenger!
