 Success!

 My registry had a key for Aspell-en, but not for Aspell.  I suspected that
 with all the trials and errors, I probably failed to follow your
 instructions carefully, somewhere along the line.

 I used Add/Remove programs to remove Aspell and Pidgin.
 I installed Pidgin, again from the original download, and it again
 complained about Aspell.
 I followed the instructions to load Aspell, and noticed that at least one
 dictionary needed to be downloaded and installed, too.  My browser was
 unable to process the request for "http://aspell.net/win32/dicts/", but
 backing up one level, I found the entry for the English dictionary
 installer, so I downloaded and installed that.
 I checked the Registry, and now there were keys for Aspell and Aspell-en.
 I started Pidgin, opened a conversation, misspelled a word, and Voila!  It
 was marked  as mispelled!

 RTFM lives, and works!!  Thanks again for your help and patience!!!
