 I know that the pidgin functionality requires that the buddy be in your
 list, that isn't what my question is about.

 My question is "Can the native client apply presence settings to buddies
 not on your list?" and, as I mentioned, I think the answer is "no".  If
 this is the case, then the next question is "Is it even possible to apply
 the presence to these buddies?" and if the answer is "yes", the last
 question is "Should we be doing stuff on the server that the native client
 doesn't do" - generally the answer to this is "no".  This is main reason
 we don't support removing yourself from buddies' lists.

 So, essentially we're back to the first question which will determine
 whether or not we can do this.
