 In UTF-8 IRC conversations, which are generally correctly decoded by the
 other side, pidgin sends some extra characters at the beginning of lines,
 as confirmed by different remote clients and IRC libraries.

 This happens regularly when starting a new private conversation (mostly
 extra tab characters at the beginning of the line), and irregularly during
 a conversation (the three byte sequence 357 273 277 octal)
