 You're largely talking about an XMPP transport (see

 [http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/plugins/gateway/readme.html
 OpenFire transport plugins]) with a little bit of
 [http://www.xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0136.html Message Archiving
 (XEP-0136)] sprinkled on top.

 Pidgin doesn't have a GUI for doing some of that (registering to a
 transport) because nobody has written one (there's a ticket for that) nor
 the Message Archiving (I haven't looked in to server-side support for
 this).
