 Well.. MySpace itself, when trying to change your password, says "Your
 password cannot be longer than 10 characters" if you input a password
 longer than 10 characters. My thought is that MySpace originally permitted
 longer passwords, but because of the way MySpaceIM handle's the password
 in the protocol they changed it to only allow 10 characters. Since they
 cant forcibly change user's passwords, they must be doing something else
 in the official client.

 My suggestion would be to require users to change their password in order
 to login with msimprpl.. Since it would only be a handful of users who
 would have a password longer than 10 characters anyway.
