Comment (by rektide):

 Failures / Crash described without any root cause.  Root cause is pidgin
 trying to play sounds and failing to get access to the sound card.  It
 tosses the above errors for a while and then keels over and crashes.
 Reproduced on Debian Lenny/Testing with 2.6.22 kernel with asound 1.0.15
 and gtk 2.12.5.  Problem still exists in 2.3.1.
