 Great suggestion - just disabled everything other than "encryption" and
 "history" and problem solved! However, I was *not* using any of the
 plugins mentioned by claun (I am not in winbloat).

 After enabling one after one, it seems that the problem was caused by
 "extended preferences", where there is a strange option called "allow
 buddy list to shrink below normal size constraints" and if i tick that the
 window can be resized.. :)
