 I don't think what you want would work cleanly.  Here is why.  Say you
 have a remote contact

 friend at server2.com

 and you want them to appear as "My Friend" in the chatroom.

 The first problem, is that some MUC servers do not expose the real JIDs to
 participants, so Pidgin wouldn't be able to tell when 'friend at server2.com'
 joins the room.  Moreover, friend at server2.com could join the room multiple
 times with different handles. Would you want all those handles to appear
 as the same name?

 Where would you propose setting those aliases up?
