 I understand definitely your point of view, Daryl.

 But in the enterprise world, people tend to log in once, memorize their
 chat room settings, and stick to that ID. In which case it could make a
 lot of sense.

 Where would I set those aliases up? In the good tradition... in the chat
 window, to the right is the list of people connected. Right click on one
 of them. Have a menu option that says "Alias"... and do it there.
