 My ICQ and AIM names are identical.  When doing a clean install of Pidgin
 on Kubuntu 7.10 from the apt repository, creating an AIM name logs in OK.
 So does creating a Jabber account.  But, when creating my ICQ login (where
 the name is identical to my AIM login), logging in logs me into AIM
 *again* instead of ICQ.

 A simple workaround is to log in using your ICQ ID.
