 I'm an idiot!  However I think pidgin should paste plain text
 automatically if the protocol doesn't support rich text.

 I use pidgin mostly for meanwhile (sametime) here at work, with gTalk as
 well...but 95% of chats are through meanwhile, and that's exactly why it
 was doing that.  Odd, because sametime itself _does_ support rich text,
 but it looks like the meanwhile connector doesn't..
